Kernel 2.6.24 and PS2 Mouse
 

Hi,

I'm trying to install OpenSuSE 10.3, but my ordinary ps2 mouse is not being recognized.

It works with OpenSuSE 10.1 and 10.2.

But it does not work with OpenSuSE 10.3 or [K]Ubuntu 7.10. The common factor is the kernel level. Fine with kernel levels 2.6.16, 2.6.18 but not 2.6.22.

With OpenSuSE 10.3, when I put the DVD in to install, I see the message, "mice: ps2 mouse device common for all mice". Yast2 starts and I see the message, "Probing mouse" and then the "Language Screen" appears, but I have no mouse. There is no indicator that the probing mouse failed or succeeded.

Anyone else having this problem? Any thoughts or suggestions?

No solution, but at least it seems to be happening to others with a plain ps2 mouse. Aren't ps2 mice common though....hmmmm

It works with stable kernels but not the 2.6.24-rc2. Have you checked the changelog for the rc2 kernel?

Oopps I should have typed 2.6.22. Thanks for catching that.

I didn't do anything fancy. I just downloaded the OpenSuSE 10.3 distribution from OpenSuSE. I also tried the Ubuntu 7.10 distribution which I received with our Linux magazine subscription.

A "uname -a" on OpenSuSE 10.3 shows: 2.6.22.12-0.1

The PS2 mouse was recognized, installed, and worked with SuSE 10.1 (2.6.16), OpenSuSE 10.2 (2.6.18), but not OpenSuSE 10.3 (2.6.22). I was planning on upgrading, but it isn't as easy as I thought. By upgrade, I mean a clean install.

Did something change for PS2 mouse support in the kernel between 2.6.18 and 2.6.22 which is affecting the OpenSuSE 10.3 distribution?
