kernel 2.4.22 problems & configuring after install

Hi,

Info:

-HP omniBook XE3 (laptop)
-Dual boot win xp, RedHat 9.0 (kernel-2.4.20-8)

Background:

-Bought a netgear WAG511 wireless pcmcia card.
-Found drivers at SourceForge (madwifi project)
-Only person with success installing this card said he used kernel-2.4.22
-Tried to install kernel-2.4.22 from source downloaded from kernel.org
-Gave up because i really don't know what i'm doing
-Found the rpm kernel-2.4.22-1.2082.nptl.i686.rpm at rpmfind.net
(ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/rawhide/1.0/....nptl.i686.rpm)
-Installed it using #rpm -ivj kernel-2.4.22-1.2082.nptl.i686.rpm
-Now I have 3 items that I can boot with lilo: the above kernel, the old kernel (2.4.20-8), and non-functioning win XP

Here are my problems... if you would be so kind:

1) When I run kernel-2.4.22, fd0 is no longer in /dev - i can't find or mount my floppy drive (although all is well with the old kernel)
2) How can I ensure that the following configurations are properly set, and if not, correct them:
-APM <disable>
-Support for hot-pluggable devices <enabled>
-PCMCIA/Cardbus support <enabled>
--Cardbus support <enabled>
-ACPI Support <enabled>
--AC Adapter <enabled>
--Battery <enabled>
--Button <enabled>
--Fan <enabled>
--Processor <enabled>
--Thermal Zone <enabled>
--Debug Statements <enabled>

Help would be much appreciated oh wise ones.

Best Regards,

Frank

"1) When I run kernel-2.4.22, fd0 is no longer in /dev - i can't find or mount my floppy drive (although all is well with the old kernel)"

The most likely explanation is that kernel-2.4.22 was not compiled with floppy support. This is possible to do although I am surprised that someone would leave out floppy support in a kernel compile. (I have floppy support in my self compiled 2.4.22 kernel so I am sure that the option exists in 2.4.22)

"2) How can I ensure that the following configurations are properly set, and if not, correct them:"

You can test each of the features by running commands that use the feature. If the feature was not selected into the kernel then the only way to correct it is to compile the kernel again.
