Hey everybody,
im new to the whole world of linux, but i do have some general knowledge about it. Ive set up the latest version of slackware and i realized that it did not come with the latest kernal, which to my knowledge is 2.4.5. It setup 2.2.19. Basically i was wondering if there is any way to update from 2.2.19 to 2.4.5.

It doan look good. I asked bascially the
same question on usenet mandrake about upgrading
from mdk7 to 8, and the silence was deafening
in asmuch as the list gets a couple hundred posts
every day.

I actually think there is a way to do it, but that
would require compiling a new kernel. if you had
anything on the drive you cared about...

And likewise, I asked about how to copy my ntscpe
preferences, bookmarks, addies, and pending email
to a new install of a new distro on a new drive,
and got no response, which is why I came here.

All the distros seem to act like you aint never
gonna upgrade and you never had anything from any
other you wanted to install....

sure it is, just go to kernel and pick up the latest source unpack it and read lots of documentation on how to compile new kernel, it takes approximately 3-4 compiles before you got what you aimed to in your goal, so be patient, and I and I guess everyone here would strongly suggest read kernel how-tos available here

just be sure you are not downloding the patch for the latest kernel, in this case you'll need all the patches that were released from your current kernel up until the latest one. Go to their FTP site and pick linux-2.4.17.tar.gz

hmmm that will get me from 2.2.19 to 2.4.17 safely?

well compiling a kernel is always a scary thing to start off with, and seldom works right at all when you're just starting, but if you follow the instructions right, you'll be able to totallyl safely try a newer kernel on your system, whilst leaving the old one in tact.
