Kernal Panics on install

I am installing Linux on a seperate HD from my Windows HD. I've done this twice before, but now I have having problems. After choosing which way to isntall (graphical or text), and the install program is setting up, it halts and the last message is "Kernal Panic: tried to kill init!" (something to that effect, my mind has lost me, and I cant remember exactly what it says). Anyway, here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 1700+
Iwill XP333-R v2.1 Motherboard
256meg Corsair PC2100 DDR
30gig Maxtor HD
10gig Quantum HD
Radeon 7000 AGP Graphics Card
56x CD
4x4x24 CD-RW

I do believe it is the AMD processor 'cuz it is built differently then the Intel, and when the install looks for various things in the CPU, they aren't where the install thinks they should be. So, how do I get around this?

Many thanks in advance!

hmmm...I've got the same problem...Athlon XP 2100+......did you ever get it fixed, or worked around, out of curiosity?

no, i didnt get it fixed, but newer version of redhat, at least > 7.1 should work just fine. its the version of the kernel that was the problem, it didnt like the setup, but newer versions do.

red hat 8 works great now

Sometimes certain distros throw a wobbly with Athlon processors (the way the default kernel is built), so it is necessary to tell the kernel about it. If memory serves me, when you come to install the bootloader you should add noathlon to the kernel parameters (the 'append=' section).

it could be a corupted iso or a bit of faulty hardware, probably not in you case but its happened to me so before
