Angry kermit in passive mode?

Can someone tell me the correct option(s) to put a kermit session into a "passive" mode? What I want is to start kermit in a console sindow listening on the serial (ttyS0) port, then have it stay connected and listening when I boot and shutdown the computer on the other end of the serial cable. I start kermit now with

kermit -b 9600 -l /dev/ttyS0

and it connects _after_ the other computer is up. Then during the boot sequence, when I want to watch the messages, it "times out" and disconnects me -- very frustrating during troubleshooting!

Help please. If this is not do-able with kermit, can you point another more "hyperterminal-like" Linux app that will do the job?

Well, to answer my own question a little bit ... I have gotten closer to the behavior I want by adding the options "-0" and "-m DIRECT", and specifying "SET CARRIER-WATCH OFF" after starting kermit, but I still have been disconnected occasionally.

Does anyone else use Linux to connect via serial cable to another computer, not a modem?
