keep linux up to date
 

Is there any software that will keep linux (I am using RH9) up to date through the command line interface. This doesn't have to be automatic. I just want a program that will allow me to run the program and check all my packages I have installed and then tell me if there are any updates available. I have to run this from the shell because I have no window manager installed nor do I want one installed.

Anything out there?

Check out 'up2date'.

ok tried up2date but i get this error when typing up2date at the bash prompt:

You are attempting to run "up2date" which requires administrative
privileges, but more information is needed in order to do so.

A common cause of this error is the system time being incorrect. Verify that the time on this system is correct.

Check out 'up2date'.

Did you check and set your date, time, and timezone correctly?

Sorry then... I'm not familiar with SSL certificates. But hopefully somebody else here can expound on that issue for you.

if up2date is a redhat thing, then will it still be supported since redhat has changed the "desktop" version to fedora and gone to the redhat enterprise edition. I mean will that up2date be supported without some sort of paid subscription?

go to rhn.redhat.com and download 2 rpms. Just click around and you will find it. These fikses that problem. There is also a howto that you can follow.
Note that you have to be registered to be able to download the updates.

I suggest you look into using one of the apt ports for rpm/RedHat. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade once a week or so should keep your system reasonably up to date.
