KDM not working - no obvious solution

I have installed KDE 3.1.4 recently, from source on to a clean system (no older KDEs on there). I have set KDM to load on boot, but when I try and log on, as any user, it gives me a box saying "KDM has failed due to a critical error - please see your kdm log or contact your system administrator" or something very similar.
My KDM log has simply the usual stuff that shows on the console when starting X (X release date, build date etc) with nothing unusual. My X-log is also perfectly normal. KDM doesn't crash or anything - you can still go to a console login, and start X from there, and you can try to log in again - it just gives the same message.
Could anyone help me with this?
Thanks
Guy
