kdesktop / icons flicker after startup

after booting into kde the icons flicker as if kde refreshes them, but it does not stop at all. if i kill and restart kdesktop the problem continues, however if i restart X and then login again everything's fine.
just wondering...
any tips?

fedora core 2 (-> kde 3.2.1)
NVIDIA driver (GeForce2) [the problem hasn't been solved by changing built-in graphics driver to the nvidia's]
