kdesktop doesn't load my desktop icons!

Hi,
I am successfully running KDE 3.3 and it used to work fine and to even be fast and reliable. However yesterday, when I started it, an error message appeared saying that the process for protocol file has stopped and it doesn t show icons. I restarted KDE several times and sometimes everything was OK but sometimes the error message appeared again. Right now the message appears always and I have no icons on the desktop.
If I kill kdesktop and start it again from inside X it loads fine and all of my icons are on their places. What can I do to make it work like before?
