Kdesktop attributes

I have just installed Mepis with KDE 3.2. All the attributes for HDA and floppy are set for "Can view contents only" If I try to chsnge this to allow writing (even in root) I get the Kdesktop window that says "Changing the attributes of files is not supported by protocol devices".
How can I change the permissions??
