KDE4 on an older machine??

I am contemplating installing fedora with kde4 on my old 700mhz powerpc, 640mb RAM.

My question is: has anyone ran kde4 on a system with similar specs? How well do you think it will run on my computer? Is it the processor or the ram I have to worry about with KDE4?

KDE4 is still unusable in my opinion (though it can be fun to play with), and a "700mhz powerpc, 640mb RAM" doesn't sound like good hardware to test it on, but why don't you just try it?

KDE4 should run on a 700MHz CPU with 640MB RAM, but due to the very impressing visual wizardry it will not be the most effective (of course, this depends on the purpose of that PC). When using the PC mainly for e-mails and web browsing (i.e. acting within a few applications only) it will work. But if you intend to use that PC for real work with a lot of application switching, you will be bothered by the usual speed penalty of KDE on older machines.

I suggest you also install some window manager with a smaller footprint (XFCE, WindowMaker, Flux, ...), just in case that the overall slowdown becomes an issue, so that you have an alternative. You can also try to launch a LiveCD that has KDE4, to get a true impression, before doing the installation.
