KDE wont start with autologin

I have Mandrake 10.0 running on AMD 3000+ with dual boot Windows/Linux. Sometimes (but not always!) KDE will not start up when I boot. It hangs at the blue screen with the black cross in the middle. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace allows me to reboot and after a few attempts it starts ok, but it's very frustrating and there doesn't seem any pattern to it. Any ideas?

Thats called the Blue screen with black cross of death, Similar to the BSOD in Windows, No, just kidding

I would check your XFreee86 config file to see if theres anything set weird and set all themes, login manager and background images to default. See if that changes anything.

I think he means X instead of + (cross). I'd suggest looking at your /etc/XF86Config (or it's equivalent in your distro) to see if something is awry. Take out the video card and replace it, start again and see if you can get in without problems. If so, switch the original video card back in and try again.

Lots of times problems unrelated to what you were working on crop up. The number of times these coincidences crop up are uncanny.

Thanks for those ideas folks. I will spend some time doing a proper set of tests and report back.

Well I had a look at XF86config but being a newbie, I didn't really know what to look for. I thought I would get rid of autologin, on the basis that the simplest ideas are often the best. After about a dozen reboots, I haven't had any failures which is good news and much better than before.

Thanks again.
