I have 2 users on a RH8.0 system. Both were created at the same time and both run KDE. Usually one user is logged in directly and the other user runs a VNC server. However, I recently wanted to run 2 VNC servers simultaneously and found that while the server appears to start up without problem, I get a "Cannot start KDE. Check your installation" error when I use a client to access it via a Windows machine.

I have no problem at all with the other user. I suspect I need to remove a lock file or something to allow the 2 servers to run side by side? Or perhaps there's a problem with X perms which is preventing KDE from starting up in a VNC environment? The key thing is that the two users are basically identical and I'm running it just fine with one.

Correction...please see the newer post above: this isn't a problem that was happening with only one user. It was global, and the problem appeared to be due to adding a new library to the ld.so.conf file. I would love to know more about what I did and how to prevent future problems/dependency issues...but the other (newer) post has more info. Very sorry for posting twice.
