I have similar problems installing themes for KDE 3.3. You should copy the .themerc file to YourHomeDir/.kde/share/apps/kstyle in order to see the theme from inside KDE. however you may experience some other problems with the themes (decorations and similar).

ok, when doing an slocate for plastik, one of the kde themes already installed, I get this...

Code:
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik_config.la
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kwin_plastik_config.so
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kwin3_plastik.la
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kwin3_plastik.so
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kstyle_plastik_config.la
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/kstyle_plastik_config.so
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/plastik.la
/opt/kde/lib/kde3/plugins/styles/plastik.so
/opt/kde/share/apps/kwin/plastik.desktop
/opt/kde/share/apps/kstyle/themes/plastik.themerc

would the new themes I want to add have to have all of these files to work, perhaps?

sorry for late reply I've been at the Linux Expo in London. I'll try file roller and let you know the result tomorrow.

I have not been able to extract the *ktheme using ark or file-roller. I suspect that the problem could be with permissions. Try to change the permissions on the ktheme as follows, "chmod 644 *ktheme" .
