Angry kde system bell only works for root

I have been having some sound issues lately. I thought I had solved them, but I have not.

Right now, I get sound when I use the KDE test sound feature. However, I don't get any kind of beeping either from the console or from system bell test in the kde setup menu.

However, that only happens when I am using kde as a regular user. As root, it all works just fine. Any suggestions?

I think that you need to change the permissions on the device file (chmod 777 /dev/<device name>).

Thank you for your response, but I guess I wasn't clear enough.

First, my device settings are 666 for /dev/dsp. I can get sound through the arts server just fine (enabled on startup by kde).

I can also get system beeps when I have just a console (no X) for both regular users and root. It just doesn't seem like KDE is even sending a system alert. I have tried the test button and also hitting backspace in a console window (which normally produces a beep) both to no avail.

I have detemined that it is a kde configuration setting that is messed up. Also, system notifications for root have stopped working as well.

See this thread for my new post:
