is there an option somewhere in there for the right-click menu, like when you right click the mouse on the desktop? i seem only to be able to change the taskbar menu from there on my setup.

I haven't read your post carefully, sorry.

Adding to right-click menu is very hard. What you need to edit is kde/templates directory (relative to your kde installation path). I can't find any description of adding to kde context menu (I've got a description od Konqueror right-click menu, if you're interested). For sure it's quite easy to add to the right-click->New menu (you just add a kdelink file).
