kde profiles
How do I copy kde profiles or parts of a profile from one user to another. For instance, if I have a root user with a menu setup the way I would like for a normal user, how do I copy that menu over to that user without getting dcop errors and whatnot?
Thanks!

This is a recurring problem, and I haven't found a solution yet and I wish the KDE developers would address it!
You might think that copying a "good" .kde directory to the new user's home, and then doing a recursive chown on that directory to make all those files owned by the new user would do it. It doesn't, because some of the files below .kde make specific references to the (old) owner, in your case, root.
For example:
cd ~/.kde
grep -r tredegar *
returns lots of stuff like "share/config/kcmfontinstrc:FontsDir=/home/tredegar/.kde/share/fonts/"
and obviously this will not work for the new user.
Hope this makes sense to you.

Yeah, that makes sense to me as that was the first thing I tried to do. So if I script it out to replace all occurances of root with the user ID that I want to have the settings then, in theory, it should work. What about just the menu layout? Is there a directory/file that just holds that information?
Thanks!

Custom menu entries and icons live in .config/ and .local/.
You may also find the kde kiosk tool useful.. http://www.kde.org/areas/sysadmin/
