KDE problem, eating away CPU
 

I recently re-installed Mandrake 10.0, and everything has been running real smoothly. Until. just today, I go into KDE, and things start running real slow. A few programs don't open up, and I find that my CPU temperature is shooting up -- it keeps on going, until I logout; so, now I'm running on enlightenment. I did a "top" comman in the terminal, and it has about five kdeinit there, taking up and eating away at the CPU.

Anyone got any ideas on what to do? Anything else to check? Help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Just like you did change to a lightweight manager. Unless of course this behaviour shouldn't occur since you have a fast pc. KDE can be really slow on slower systems (mine!). You could try killing the kdeinit and see if it keeps running, maybe there's an error that too few instances of those run.

My Comp is pretty fast; running a Athlon 2600+, with 712 DDR Ram. Funnily enough, KDE seems to be running quite smoothly now. I fear it will revert to doing the same thing when I restart my computer again, next time, but I'll wait and see. I'll try killing the KDEinit, like you said.

(Though, after this has happened, open office doesn't seem to want to open in KDE anymore (works on the other DEs))

Now it should surely be not that slow. My pc is a lot slower and I never saw anything like that. Kdeinit has something to do with starting up programs maybe there's something wrong with running some programs automatically?

go to your xinetd configure files and dissable FAM
it's called sgi_fam i think
that might help ???
