KDE Konsole adding extra characters

When I load a manual thru the KDE Konsole it adds little boxes in to the text.
Its tough enough trying to figure out what is being stated without the damn little boxes.

How do I get rid of them???

The KDE version is
Konsole 1.1.3 (using KDE 3.0.3-8 Red Hat)

I had the same problem and solved it by editing /etc/man.config and changing the NROFF line to

NROFF /usr/bin/nroff -Tlatin1 -mandoc -c

This sorted the problem.
