kde initializing peripherals hangs or redisplays login

I've installed RHEL AS 2.1 on an IBM x365 server. Each time I log in to a KDE session (as root or userid) after typing the password, the login dialog box reappears after the screen flashes. If I log in to a Gnome session, this does not occur. Because of other (unrelated) requirements, I'm forced to use KDE sessions.

If I turn dpms off in XFConfig-4, KDE login hangs during Initializing peripherials.

Don't really know if the 2 anomalies are related.

Please help.
