KDE (DCOP) problem starting root after forced reboot
 

KDE 3.2.2 has developed a nasty problem. Due to a power cut the system went offline just as root was loading KDE. After the power came back on I could run KDE as user with no problems but root won't load anymore.

I get: Could not read network connetion list
/root/.DCOPserver_debian__0

I found several threads on this forum regarding this problem. I tried all the hints like deleting the files in tmp, root folder (.KDE) and so on. Nothing seems to help.
Perhaps important: I had neither of the .DCOPserver_debian__0 & .DCOPserver_debian_:0 files I was advised to delete. I do have them as user.

Any clues on how to get my root account back to work again?

You should go into the non-graphical interface (ctrl+alt+F1). Log in as root, then type 'hostname'. Then you see your hostname. You should change it into localhost (or, if it wouldn't work, try localhost.localdomain). Do this with the command: hostname localhost (or hostname localhost.localdomain). Then press ctrl+alt+F7 to go back to the graphical interface. Try to log in now.

I hope this works, I once had a similar problem and this is the way I fixed it. When you're back in KDE, you should check in the network configuration screen if the hostname stays on localhost, otherwise you will have to do this every time Linux boots.
