KDE crashing
 

Hello,


my kde on my mandrake box seems not to be able to load. There is alot of errors about missing files. IS there a way to reinstall this, i tried to run the repair from the disc and it didn't seem to have an option to repair it in anyway. It does boot fine into the command line and all my data and programs are there. I have gnome installed but i didn't know the command to run it.

Hope someone can help!

Hmmm... Does KDE start up at all?
If you get the splash screen ou might take a look at the folders /tmp and /var and check what permissions they got.

To change windowmanager i'd use either kdm or gdm and choose from there.

What distro are you running btw?

is your hardware _old enough_ for your distribution? there should have passed some time between the building date of your pc/notebook and the release date of your software, otherwise it may not support your hardware. e.g., for my main machine which i bought in january, there is only one possible linux-distro that supports the complete hardware.

so what are you trying to set up, which hardware and which distro do you want to use?

there are many possible things that can lead to a desktop-refusal such as wrong configuration of your screen, not supported graphical environment or lacking permissions. and thats not all, of course. so further information would be helpful.

Hi. I had a similar problem with Mandrake Linux 9.1. Installing 9.2 rc2 fixed many problems and gave me KDE However, a number of other things didn't work, so I downloaded the Mandrake 9.2 updates and installed most of them (except the Apache stuff since I don't use Apache). Then I really had a weird OS. In the end, I too found that doing a repair install changed nothing, but I did a complete re-install which fixed almost everything! Somehow, the updates were kept and the errors overwritten. Don't ask me how this was done, but it might work for you (:-)

PS: My downloads were done with a DSL line, which even then took hours. So maybe you might want to order a CD.
