Question KDE Control Center outlook, can it be changed?

Has it changed since 3.5.xx? I could swear I saw it back in the days like this: on the left was a tree-view of the components, then on the right the area where you could alter the options. Like this:
http://www.kde.org/screenshots/image...trolcenter.png

I started wondering why it looks different to me, on one Kubuntu 6.06 box (KDE 3.5.3). On my KDE desktop it's a bit like the Windows Control Panel, a window that has icons for configuration utilities (Panel, Sound, Network, ...) instead of the tree-view.

First I thought they've just changed it from the previous versions (and wondered why, since I dislike this new one). But yesterday I was surfing the web and found some screenshots of a KDE 3.5.4 which is newer than my version, and there it was again - the tree-view control center. Damn.

I'm almost sure I've digged the options through and haven't found a box to mark for "I want the old Control Center outlook". I really think the tree-view was better, for me at least. So: is it just a matter of switching some tap to get it look like it used to, or is it some new update, or some (K)Ubuntu's own tweak, or what? I thought I wouldn't have to spend time on matters like this, but the new look is irritating..

I hope I've just missed all the obvious search results everywhere, have blind spot where I should see the config tap for this and just don't hear the frequencies where people said how to change it..but if you've got a solution, I'm thankful for it

Mine looks like the screenshot you posted. I am using KDE on Gentoo, Suse and FreeBSD. What I suspect it that the Kubuntu people are the ones who changed the KDE control center to suite their needs because they don't like the default. Apparently you can install EasyKubuntu, run it and there is an option to fix kcontrol so that it returns to normal.

Thanks for the information, I'll try that later when I'm back at my laptop.

I think it is. I don't use Kubuntu or Ubuntu but I found the result for the possible fix, by searching on google.

Oh right. I tried tracking it down from Google too, but apparently with wrong search terms since all I got was either non-english/finnish/swedish/german and a few of the pages refused to load..maybe I'll try later again.

In my opinion Google's efficiency has lowered. The results are getting worse day by day, compared to what they used to be -- it might be the increasing number of (dynamic) pages or something, but I used to get better results using Google in the past ("better results" as in "pages that better refer to the thing I'm after"). Or it could be just me not using wise enough search strings..
