First a little compliment : This month I've posted here with 4 questions, all have been answered within days, thanks to all contributors.
So...new problem. My system, debian unstable, kde 3.5rc1 (allitoth) stopped playing audio cds !
I've read the threads in here and googled as never before.
Things USED to work, could burn cds and play audio cds from vlc. Since mp3 etc. is not my major thing I haven't really explored this in linux except as said playing cds and burning when needed.
Wanting to make things easier I installed kio-plugins so that I could browse audio cds in konqueror with audiocd:/ service.
I also installed amarok (now removed).
Thats when trouble started. I can now BROWSE audio cds with audiocd:/ but it stalls during "copy file(s) process" if I click anything. I can no more open audio cds in vlc (or xmms). K3B just stays at 0% if asked to copy the cd image (this too used to work).
Basically, my system has stopped reacting normally to audio cds. Of course , I am aware that Debian unstable and alioth kde isn't excactly stable but as said, everything used to work.
Just to be sure about permissions I checked /dev/hdd and it's set to rw-rw-rw, I also tested booting as root , no change.

Well, you know your last change was to get rid of amarok, so put it back! If it doesn't work after re-installing amarok, then look at your install tool (aptitude, synaptic) for broken packages. Try and repair them. Good Luck!
Trouble started before removing amarok ! Just pointed out I removed it ...
HOWEVER : after a restart vlc can play cds again. audiocd:/ still the same though.
Not sure but it might be possible that this can be a bug in kde 3.5rc1.
Not interested in flame here, but would be nice if kde could play audio cds like under windows : open explorer, click the mp3 (or whatever) and play. And drag and drop copying/ripping. I understand this is the goal agout kioslaves and the whole audiocd:/ approach and I'm loving the idea ! Just hope I can get it working..
Thanks for the FAST reply..
EDIT :: K#B same (stalls) and vlc needs the system to restart between "vlc sessions" to accept cds.
For the record , no viruses/rootkit on he system that clamav/chkrootkit/rkhunter knows about.

There's a price to be paid for running those release candidates. And no flames from me on your KDE wishes. I think the KDE devs will get it improved eventually.
