I have just upgraded from KDE 4.4.5 to 4.6.2, and have a serious problem.

I have 3 accounts on the computer, one created after the upgrade. The first, which I use daily, works fine other than having to restore desktop #1 from scratch (the other 3 were untouched) and restore some of my settings.

The other 2 accounts get scrambled desktops. When starting, KDE displays a box in the center of the screen and icons fade in, starting with a disk drive icon and ending with a larger K over a gear. After the disk icon fades in and the others are still blurry, the screen goes black and then the K/gear appears in a small blue rectangle. The panel appears at the top but is not usable, and bottom of the screen as a black bar and usable. If I click on the lower left corner where the launcher button should be, the window that appears is blank or may have one or two items displayed, and a grey bar with dots and streaks appears under the panel at the top. If I move the cursor over the menu window some of the entries appear briefly, but not always the same ones. If I do it enough I see the one I want.

If I use a keyboard shortcut to exit, the confirmation box appears, but is usually empty. It works however. I just tried again to make sure I had a current .xsession-errors file and the confirmation box and count-down box appeared good but on a black background.

I have re-installed dbus, p7zip, and consolekit. No change. Here is my .xsession-error:

Compared to 4.4.3, it is rather sluggish as well.

Why the variable results, and why does one account work, a second account that was working fail, and a new account fail?
