Kde 3 not saving configuration on exit

Hello everyone!
I just installed Suse 8.0 today, because I decided to abandon MS platforms, after some really unpleasant experiences with XP.
Besides for RH 9.0, SuSe was the only distro I had on a CD, so I decided to install it because I am a little tired of RH as well. Anyway, to make a long story short, today I spent about 8 hours installing and configuring stuff. Everything is OK, except for the fact that KDE's configuration isn't exactly saved at logout. The only configuration thing that is saved (and loaded at the next start) is the Window Decoration thing, and the taskbar clock setting. Everything else (background color and wallpaper, taskbar size and icons, etc. is not saved).
I tried a lot of things, like using "startx" instead of "kdm", or ctrl+alt+backspace isntead of log out, but no success. Any suggestiosn would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and some more info: I am logged as root, and the KDE version is 3.0.0

you may want to check the settings on your session manager......i'm on drake 9.2/kde 3.2 so i don't know if it would be found in the same place but mine is in: kmenu>configuration>kde>components>session manger
you may also want to create a user....i know that when i am logged on as root in the gui a lot of my settings won't stick (i can't get my drive icons on the desktop).

Already checked that, and it's set to save the session at logout..
I'll try to log in as a normal users, see if they stick...
