KDE 3.1 in Redhat 9
 

Hi all,
I just installed redhat 9 and I was wondering how to I get KDE 3.1? Is it installed by default in redhat? Is it something I will need to add? If it is something that I need to add could someone please point me in the right direction.

well if its not istalled be default i recommend using apt-get to upgrade it, cause there is i think 14 packages and apt-get makes this very easy...i would assume rh9 comes with 3.1, but i could be wrong, since rh8 comes with 3.0 i think it would make sense....just open a program like konqueror and just go to the help menu and then go to about kde and it will tell you..
unless you wanted to go to the console and issue a command such as "rpm -qa|grep -i kde"

I did the research and RH 9 does come with KDE 3.1 installed. How do I switch between desktop enviroments? In redhat 7 there was a dropdown box to select the enviroment but in 9 there is not. Is there a way that I can turn the box back on again? Is there a command line option to switch desktop enviroments?

The first time you use up2date it will bump your KDE installation up to 3.1-11. Which Login Manager are you using, if you are using the default it will be gdm, in this case look along the bottom and I believe there is a menu called Sessions, click on this and it should give you a choice of Window Managers to use. If you don't care for this and prefer the KDE login manager you can either go into /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add kdm. If you don't want the gdm window manager at all click on your menu then system settings then add/remove applications under the X Window Systems you should find gdm take the check mark out and next time you restart you should be using the kdm login manager.

under system settings or preferences theres another thing that says more system settings or something like that and what your looking for is the desktop switching tool.

Theres also a useful commandline tool in redhat called switchdesk.
Try the following cmd:
$ switchdesk KDE
// to start KDE the next time
