KDE 3.1 hangs on start...sort of...

I'm using Mandrake 9.0

and this weekend I used URPMI and the texstar source to upgrade KDE to 3.1....

Everything seems to have gone ok...I made sure I got most of the KDE packages, and the KDM when loading in graphical mode works fine (except for that annoying XConsole in the bottom right corner....)...

The one thing I notice is that when I log into KDE as root or as a user, it seems to load ok but the cursor stays in that wristwatch mode as if something is still loading.

I can click on menus, start programs and everything....but that d*mn busy watch stays.

I've looked in top, ps -aux and such but I can't figure out what's hanging....

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

(Note: I don't get this problem when using other wms like blackbox)
