kde-3.1.4 & artswrapper & no ac3-sound passtrough

if I start up X i get the following error:
Sound server warning message:
Can't set real-time scheduling priority.
You need to run artswrapper as root or
setuid root. This means that you will
likely not be able to produce acceptable
sound (i.e. without clicks and breaks).

if i run artswrapper as root i get this message:
Quote:
/opt/kde/bin/artswrapper
>> running as realtime process now (priority 50)
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such device)
i think it might be related to the following problem:

i don't get why my ac3 passtrough isn't working for xmms or realplayer files when using mplayer. i don't have any problems when playing a dvd with xine or mplayer, but sound doesn't work for anything else than a dvd.
here's my xmms output when playing a mp3:
$ xmmsMessage: output format: 5

and my mplayer output when trying to play a .rm file (realplayer):

i'm having this problem for a long time now with several distros, so i guess this is simply a configuration question.
i'm running kernel-2.6.0-test11 with built in alsa-drivers or kernel-2.4.22 with manually built alsa-drivers (0.9.8).

i don't have a clue what to do next, so i'm grateful for any hint.
