Kdat problem

I am having a problem with kdat, it refuse to see a tape in the drive. I
loaded mt-sh and I have run a couple of commands from the commandline mt
-f /dev/st0 status (eject\rewind etc.) and it response like it should. In
kdat I have changed the settings to point at /dev/st0 I have tried as both
user and root I have made sure both user and root are a member of the tape
group but the kdat still refuse to see a tape in the drive.

The tape drive in questions is a HP C1539 DDS3, distro is debian stable with
a 2.6.8 smp kernel and KDE 3.3 kdat ver 2.0.1

Any pointers anyone???

Tim
