kcharselect troubles

Does anybody know how to get kcharselect to work. I'm using a SuSE 9.x installation that does have the kde3util package installed and I do have the following files:

/etc/X11/susewm/AddEntrys/SuSE/System/Tools/KCharSelect.desktop
/opt/kde3/share/applnk/Utilities/KCharSelect.desktop
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kcharselect_panelapplet.la
/opt/kde3/lib/kde3/kcharselect_panelapplet.so

When I right-click the panel and choose Add => Applet, there is no KCharSelect in the list and double clicking the KCharSelect.desktop file gives an error stating it has no "Type=..." entry. If I add Type=Application, double-clicking it simply does nothing at all.

My question is... how do I get KCharSelect to sit on my panel or in my system tray... how do I get to run the f**** thing!!

(Bit frustrated, especially since there is NOTHING on KCharSelect in the kde docs)

Tnx.
