Kbuildsycoca would freeze my system

Hello to everyone;

recently I've found out why my system would freeze after a certain amount of time. The reason is kbuildsycoca with the --incremental argument. From Gnome system monitor I've noticed that kbuildsycoca after an hour of use eats up about 1 Gig of Virtual Memory and about 90 % of CPU resources. I have to kill it so that system can "breathe" once again. Can anyone explain to me what kbuildsycoca is being used for and if there is a way to stop that problem. I've noticed that as root kbuildsycoca won't start so it is a user specific issue.

I am using SuSE 10.0 and my default Desktop is Gnome. (I use some KDE apps, though).

Thanks everyone in advance.
