KAudioCreator rips silent audio files

so, this is the first time i've posted a question here. i have found it to be a great resource, and i've had much success reading solutions to others' problems, but now it is my time for i can't seem to sort this one out, though i don't doubt it will turn out to be an utterly simple solution. so anyway....

i've recently switched to Suse 9.1. i've ripped songs from an audio cd using KAudioCreator. it seems to work all right until i go to play the files in XMMS, RealPlayer, etc. everything looks okay, but there's no sound. the time is counting and the song location bar thing is moving its usual course, but there's no sound playing whatsoever. these programs have no problems playing audio cds or mp3s ripped with another program (on my windows pc), but they won't play any format file (.wav, .mp3, .ogg) ripped using KAudioCreator... yet.

Any suggestions?
