Yes, Kali is a pentesting (network penetration testing) tool for white hatters/system admins.

If you're not directly using Kali for this, either in a real world scenario or for educational purposes, then there really is no sense in using it. It would just be a major headache and it will be easy for you to mess up since you're logged in as root to the gui 100% of the time.

However, if you are using it for those purposes.. well then you should probably start by "burning" another live disk to make sure it's not a problem with the local copy that you have. (download it again).

If it worked before and following the same method now does not work, what changed? Computers don't make decisions on their own so either you deliberately or unknowingly made some change to cause this or your hardware is going bad. You have an entry for unetbootin showing in your initial post. Did you use unetbootin to do a frugal install on the drive? You're short on information. From what you posted, we have no reason to believe you have any other OS on this machine which seem unlikely.

If you are just trying to learn by using Kali, it would be much simpler to follow the detailed instructions on their site to create a bootable flash drive.

Also, just an fyi:

I used to have success with Unetbootin and it went through a few months where I could never get it to work. Moved on to multi-boot usb and never looked back.

I doubt whatever that bug was still exists, but I can't confirm that. (It was definitely a bug because it happened to me on all systems no matter what.)

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Not enough information but my I'm guessing a drive with a live multiboot setup using something like yumi. I also assume your friend actually setup the drive and so If it has failed or has become corrupted then the easiest fix would be to ask your friend to repair the disk or create a new one.
