I solved the issue...I lowered the screen depth and edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I have a long story, so I will make it quick, kinda a two part post
I just found out that I was rooted...I didn't do a complete forensic, just wiped the laptop clean and started fresh. This is a great chance to learn about security
The only problem is that now the display for Kaffeine is vertically squished, this is a new one for me. I took a screenshot, but the screen shot has a normal resolution. Strange huh?
My desktop looks fine, but my KDM screen has really oversized letters, making login on difficult as well.
I have installed the w32codecs and lidvd. I have played with the aspect ratio and looked at the xine engine params and nothing jumps out.

I will install gdm and see if that is a band-aid that will help for now, though I am curious about my issues, and I never want to leave a computer issue unsolved.
