Kaffeine and DVD

I can finally play my DVD, but for some reason it is quite choppy. I do not have a slow computer by any means, and I just bought it 2 months ago. What can I do to get it running smoothly?

I had choppy video with Mplayer using Gl video, but when I changed it to use Xvideo, it worked like a charm. Look in the Kaffeine options for the choice of video rendering and see if you can use a different one. That may help.

At a guess, your hard disk and the cd drive are on the same ide cable. If so, do yourself a favor and put the cd on a second cable. You should be able to increase the players buffer size to get around the problem.
If you try running a dvd with mplayer from a terminal, is should tell you why playback is slow and suggest what to do to fix it.
Cheers,
Stan

Ok-I will try that vectordrake. As far as hardware setup, my DVD+/-RW drive is master on primary, and my HDD is master on secondary.

(factory settings)

After looking a bit closer, I see that there should be an "auto" selection under "video" in the xine settings (settings on the menubar in Kaffeine). There are a few selections on mine (but I did install the win32 codecs, so I may have a few extra). xvideo is called xv now. Try different engines to see what works. I bet that the xv one will, though, unless your machine has a really uncommon or anemic video card.

Well, I didn't alter anything, but I stuck the DVD back into my computer after it was shut down for a while and didn't have any problems. Maybe it was just to hot...
