k3b starts new instance of KDE, Slack 10 2.6.7

I've been struggling with this problem for a while and have finally decided to see if anybody on LQ can help me fix it.

Whenever I start k3b, whether from a konsole window or from an icon, it begins loading normally for a few seconds then the KDE startup splash image appears and all the icons, windows, menus, etc. are shoved upward off of the screen and henceforth become inaccessable. I assume that what happens is that a new instance of KDE is spawned over the existing one.

I am using KDE 3.3.1 and Slackware 10 with kernel 2.6.7. This happened using KDE 3.2 as well and did not stop after I upgraded using slackware packages (uninstalling the old version). I compiled k3b from the latest stable source code available from their web site.

If anybody has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them. If you need any more information let me know.
