k3b problems under KDE, Mandrake 10.1

Hello,

Got a couple of puzzling k3b problems that I was hoping someone could help shed some light on...

I am running Mandrake 10.1 Official and KDE 3.2.3 and my problems are related to me running k3b 0.11.16. I better admit that I am somewhat of a newbie before I start asking questions... Now that's done, here are my questions:

1. Burning data cd as root:
When creating a normal data cd project, the burn process starts as normal and completes without errors. However, I am unable to read the cd either under Linux or Windows... I have used k3b in past (Red Hat 9) and had no problems at all. Could these problems be related to the fact that I have set my (IDE) cd drives to SCSI emulation?:

/dev/sr1 /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrw auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0

2. Runnintg k3b as normal user:
This is the really puzzling problem... When I start k3b as a normal user, the program takes a very long time to load and also starts Mozilla Thunderbird (and/or Firefox) when these programs are installed. If I kill Thunderbird/Firefox, the program(s) are immediately restarted! This problem may have something to do with the fact that I initially installed Firefox and Thunderbird from tarballs and had some problems with these apps. I subsequently uninstalled these apps (as well as k3b) and re-installed them using urpmi. I have also updated the system several times.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mats.

To the first I would be surprised if any data at all was writtien as you have your cdrw set to ro (read-only), should be rw. As for the second sorry maybe someone else will solve that one for you.

Thanks for the feedback,

I have edited fstab so the entries for the dc devices does now look like:

/dev/sr1 /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec,users 0 0
/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrw auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,rw,exec,users 0 0

However, this does not seem to change things as far as I can see - the burn process still completes without errors and once it's completed there appear to be data on the disk but I cannot read it. I have not yet found a solution to problem 2 (k3b causing launch of both t-bird and f-fox - this is driving me crazy...) and I'm starting to suspect that my problem of not being able to read the contents of the cd's (problem 1) may be due to incorrect setup of my cd devices. I will start a new thread asking for assistance on how to correctly setup these. Will post back on problem 2 once (if) I found a solution to it.

Cheers,
Mats.

Problems now solved. Well, one of them at least...

Edited my fstab to:

/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrw iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0
/dev/sr1 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0

That solved the mounting problem.

As regards my issues with k3b and f-fox/t-bird, I simply uninstalled k3b and installed xcdroast instead. Not very satisfactory I know but now I can burn cd's without any problems! I'd be very interested in getting feedback from anyone who has experienced similar problems with k3b and managed to solve them!

Thanks,
M.

if you look at dmesg it should be that the cdrw drive is getting the device node sg0 for writing as well as
sr0 for reading and mounting
try making another link in /dev
cd /dev
ln -s sg0 cdrecorder

then point things to /dev/cdrecorder to write to it

no need for a mountpoint or entry in fstab

i use scsi emulation and that's the way mine works anyway

same problem

I have similar problem under Mandrake 10.1. I burn the CD, k3b says everything finished ok, but then the cd is unreadable.

Is xcdroast on the distro?
