k3b no longer works

I have KDE 3.2.0 with kernel 2.6.3. I cannot get k3b to run any more. The splash screen appears, and it gets to the point where it says "Creating GUI" and then gets no further.
If I start from a terminal window I get the Warning:
kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /home/guy/.kde/share/icons/Umicons_2.0/ group not valid.
But I think that this was there before it stopped working. I built k3b from source with the --disable-dependency-tracking and --disable-debug flags (and --prefix=/opt/kde-3.2.0). I have also recently upgraded to XFree4.4*.
I have tried recompiling and have tried versions 0.10 and 0.11 but both have the same problem.
Could anyone help, or suggest how to try and track down this error.

*I did this to try and get my graphics card working. Please don't flame me about it, if you think that this is the problem then just say so.
