Dear Moderators and fellow enthusiasts-
I am installing K3B again, running Red Hat Enterprise 3 ( tettnang). First, I tried the method of installing the required rpms. For the record, they are:
compat-gcc-c++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm , compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm ,
flac-1.1.0-1.rhfc1.ccrma.i386.rpm, libmad-0.15.1b-3.1.fc2.fr.i386.rpm,id3lib-3.8.3-1.i386.rpm, compat-gcc-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm, compat-libstdc++-devel-7.3-2.96.122.i386.rpm, and
id3lib-3.8.3-alt2.i586.rpm, not necessarily in that order. At that point I was able to install k3b-0.11.18-1.xcyb.fc2.i386.rpm and the text-based install appeared to complete without error, however there were no icons for K3B under Sound and Video. I then rebooted, still no air. I rpm -e 'd , then went through the process of installing K3B with yum ( I still have a little problem with 'yum update' ) and that appeared to install successfully * with * the icon appearing as expected, still, K3B would not start, no splash, nothing. I attempted to run it in a terminal and got an error about not being able to relocate, something about /var/'something?
All suggestions will be considered, I'll try almost anything.
TIA
U'll have to run "k3bsetup" as root first before u can use k3b so it detects ur binaries and cdwriter hardware properly and sets some basic permissions conductive to burning cds.
As far as the icons are concerned, if they don't show up on the menu, u can create ur own using "kmenu"

There appears to be something wrong with your libk3bcore.so.2 file. it is present in the libk3b2 package. Just download it from rpmfind.net or something and install it manually with the --force flag & then try k3b.
Good Friends-
I have succeeded! the k3b users mailing list ( sourceforge.net ) has some very astute individuals fielding questions. My solution involved using an rpm repository for Tao Linux ( I can describe in some detail) and finding one missing rpm. I am a little worried that windoze box can't read the first DVD I burned, but that's another subject. The repository is at http://www.nanotechnologies.qc.ca/propos/linux and you will need to append the following to your yum.conf:
[pguay]
name=Tao Linux - PGuay
baseurl=http://www.nanotechnologies.qc.ca/propos/linux
gpgcheck=1
and then do : $ rpm --import RPM-GPG-KEY-pguay
to get the GPG KEY ( if you want. other wise, change last line to : gpgcheck=0
OK, so do these guys keep an hdlist.cz file for Mandrake Users also, or do I have to usr YUM in Mandrake now? (You can do this, as there is a yum rpm for Mandrake, but I still prefer urpmi to autodownload/install rpms/dependencies).
