k3b in redhat 9.0

I installed the source tar file and am running k3b, However every time I try to burn a cd, it gives me the error that I havent inserted a blank disc, which I just pulled off a new spindle.

Cdrdao version 1.1.7 - (C) Andreas Mueller <>
SCSI interface library - (C) Joerg Schilling
Paranoia DAE library - (C) Monty
Check for current driver tables.
Using libscg version 'andreas-0.5-UNIXWARE_Patch'
0,0,0: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R2102 Rev: 1317
Using driver: Toshiba CD-ROM Reader - Version 0.1 (options 0x10000)
ERROR: Inserted disk is not empty and not appendable.

Is this due to the fact that my cd burner is a dvd cd-rw combo drive?
