K3b does not write to DVD's
I have an impossible dream to be able to write a data DVD of my various picture files and movie files using K3b however, I've never been able to do that.
I have SuSE 10.0 and a Sony DVD+RW writer and I have K3b 1.0.1 installed on my system and I've upgraded growisofs from 5.21 to 7.0. All I get are error messages: wrong medium type media not formatted or unsupported The media is Sony DVD+RW and I've tried Memorex DVD+R, also DVD-RW (don't know the brand of that one). K3b complains about the system's automounting but the message does not help me any because I have no clue about editing the fstab file. I like that the system automounts so that I don't have to mess with trying to type mount commands. The only thing that's ever worked for me is a CD-R. I have several Gigabites to backup, I don't want to be buying tons of CD-R's for doing that. Why can't k3b work despite the system automounting the CD/DVD's? Here is the output from the latest attempt: System ----------------------- K3b Version: 1.0.1 KDE Version: 3.5.6 "release 64.1" QT Version: 3.3.8 Kernel: 2.6.13-15.15-smp Devices ----------------------- RICOH CD-R/RW MP7040A 1.40 (/dev/hdd, ) [CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM] [Error] [SAO, TAO, SAO/R96P, SAO/R96R] SONY DVD+RW DRU-120A 1.51 (/dev/hdc, ) [CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW] [DVD-ROM, DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW] [SAO, TAO, RAW, SAO/R96P, SAO/R96R, RAW/R96R] Burned media ----------------------- DVD+R K3bIsoImager ----------------------- mkisofs print size result: 1714136 (3510550528 bytes) Pipe throughput: 33674240 bytes read, 33669888 bytes written. Can you post the output of cat /etc/fstab?

Can you post the message K3b give about the system automounting? I think I saw in another post somewhere that K3b is incapable of unmounting an drive that was automounted...
Oh, and just because automounting is turned off doesn't mean you have to use the command line to mount a drive. You can display the drive on the desktop and just mount and umount by right clicking it... |
It said:
Device SONY - DVD+RW DRU-120A is automounted. K3b is not able to unmount automounted devices. Thus, especially DVD+RW rewriting might fail. There is no need to report this as a bug or feature wish; it is not possible to solve this problem from within K3b. Solution: Replace the automounting entries in /etc/fstab with old-fashioned ones or use a user-space mounting solution like pmount or ivman. Device RICOH - CD-R/RW MP7040A is automounted. What are "old fashioned" automounting entries? |

Would I be able to make those instructions apply to the DVD drive only and not affect the other devices needing automount?
|
No idea. I don't use Suse and haven't been exposed to it's version of automounting. I guess I would make a backup copy of fstab and then try changing only the fstab line for the DVD drive (and not do the "noautomount.fdi" part of the howto). Then see what happens. You can always revert back...
|
Thanks, I'll try it and report back.
|
Well I had edited the fstab but forgot about making a back up. It seems the system did that automatically but I have no idea how to get it to go back to using it again. I tried the cp command but I'm not sure if you put the original file's name first or second. Anyway, that did not work so I guess I got it wrong.
I tried to change it back (I did all this from Konquerer as root) but now when I try to explore any disk info in Konquerer, it has trouble reading the disk: CD's I made in K3b look blank (but there's stuff on them, they play fine). The data CD's in Konquerer are being read kinda strangely, a new folder is added with the title of the data CD and then this goes away when the data CD is taken out of the drive. Or sometimes, Konquerer does not read it at all and it looks like it is blank. The address is media:/cdrecorder or sometimes, system:/media:/cdrecorder. I noticed that the little icon is different at times too. This is just strange. |
So, this is the latest attempts to get k3b to work. I'm going to have to cut this in half though:
I uninstalled the rpm version of k3b and after getting the necessary libraries, I installed the source package. All seemed to go well. However, I still cannot burn DVDs! This is the attempted burn session's output when I ran it from the command line (see next message): |

I've even tried another app called, Graveman, and that did not work either, it kept telling me, "/usr/bin/mkisofs no such file or directory" and "invalid node" I know I have mkisofs because k3b tells me I have it! |
