k3b dependencies
 

K3B IS GREAT, but I'm still trying to get all of it's dependencies installed on my new Mandrake 9.1 machine, so hopefully I can backup my dvd's and playstation 2 games. For the past 2-weeks I can not successfully get a version of transcode to install because it does not seem possible to find all of the dependencies needed for that. Also back to other k3b dependencies, like tccat, tcextract, etc. Anyone know where maybe I can find all this stuff?

i'm not sure it will be the same, but i have a FULL working version of k3b installed on my red hat 9 box. I can use all of the features on it, there are no unchecked options - you can check out my page on red hat 9, there is a huge list of dependencies there for a few major programs. I still need to organize it, but it may give you an idea as to which files you need.

Wow, I believe that should be the same, Mandrake 9.1 is a redhat based O.S. and I've seen other RPM's saying that they will work on both...

I'm curiouse, How did you get a full working version, just install it, or did you actually hunt down and find all the dependencies?

Actually I found no hope on that site...

My current problem is a k3b dependency, transcode, it won't load because of dependencies like Lame, then Lame won't load because of another 1- dependency nobody on the net can seem to find anywhere, it is libtinfo.so.5
Anybody know where this one could be found?
Or does it even exist?
Has transcode ever been successfully loaded?


This is one thing that really sucks about linux, I never ran into problems like this with windows, in windows you just load a program, and viola you are done. In Linux so far it seems like people halfway put some of these programs like k3b together and then leave the other unheard of parts out that don't seem to be able to be found anywhere, it is supposed to have all these capabilities, "IF YOU CAN PIECE THE REST TOGETHER"
I've spent 2-weeks so far, I'm about ready to reinstall windows so I can get my DVD's backed up. Is thier any other program other than k3b that is actually complete that would do this?
that doesn't have more problems with dependencies, dependencies, dependencies.
k3b seems to be nothing more than a waste of time, that is not what it is supposed to be. As far as burning plain data it does great, I will give it that...

If you're using Mandy 9.1, then make life easy on yourself! Go to http://plf.zarb.org and add them as an RPM 'repository'. I had problems with transcode too, but when I stumbled upon this (found it in MicroMart, care of one Mr Spagnol) I was laughing!

Oh, and Mandrake was originally a RedHat based OS, but it is its own beast now. Sure, it uses RPMs, but so do many, many other distros. A lot of the time RPMs from one distro will work on another (I've been using SuSE and Lycoris (shudder) RPMs on my Mandy 9.1 setup fine), but that doesn't mean that they are the same thing. Just a thought. 2p.

ok what i don't understand is that k3b is installed with mdk9.1...and if you didn't do a custom install when you installed mdk then maybe you missed it, but the alternative to that is that it obviously should be on the cd in the rpm folder so double click that rpm and it will install all the dependancies for you...

I dont understand how anything on that site will help, please explain, do I need to install PLF, if I do, what will that do for me?

DrOzz, you see, k3b's legal position is completely compatible with that of MandrakeSoft, however, transcode might not be. Since k3b will work without transcode, but you will not be able to do some things (like burn vcds/svcds/video dvds) without it. Hence, k3b can be distributed fine but transcode may be in a sticky situation.

Similarly, RedHat ship with XMMS (like WinAmp for Linux) but they do not ship with MP3 support. XMMS can play mp3s, but it needs a particular plugin that RH did not think they should include due to licencing issues. You can think of transcode as a sort-of plugin, but of course, it's much more than that!

I just installed Mandrake 9.1 ( Bamboo ) off of the 3 CD's that I burned the images onto that I got off the net. Yes it automatically installed k3b. So are you saying that I should uninstall k3b, then find the RPM on one of the CD's, then, click on it and it should all be installed?

Penguin Liberation Front. It is a collection of RPM files. If I remember correctly, you will need to go to one of the mirrors (I go to http://mirrors.zoreil.com/plf.zarb.org/9.1). Here you will find lots of RPM files that are good, but were not included in either the main Mandy CDs or in the Contrib package. I know that transcode is in there (and that it installs OK if you have the install CDs and the contrib too?) because I installed it earlier.

If you go into MCC/DrakConf you can add it using the software manager (or whatever).

Well all this helps me understand a few things, this is good, I can hopefully remain Microshaft free...

oh i see what your saying thymox, and i am totally aware of all that...i just really never read that much of the thread, i just thought viper was sitting there and trying to install k3b on his mdk9.1 box, and i was just stating that he should already have it...my bad :P

Sorry I wasn't more clear on that, I just noticed after I installed Mandrake 9.1, I went to k3b setup, and it has a list of things that are not installed yet. So after trying to hunt all these things down that do not seem to exist in fresh RPMs, or any other site I've tried along with other searches, I was able to find transcode but it wouldn't install because all these dependency problems

has more dependency problems than the last one is thier any transcode out thier that actually installs without all these problems?

right now if I can just find something called libtinfo.so.5
I can install Lame, I already have all the other transcode dependencies installed, so then it should install, then I should be down to only needing to find about 10 other dependencies that do not seem to exist yet.

Anybody know anything about libtinfo.so.5
