k3b but no kde or other cdburning programs

It looks like k3b is the best program to burn CDs with now. Only I don't really want to download a couple of 100 MBs only for k3b but if it's really recommended I'll do it.

There are a couple of other programs I tried but none really stood out and I have to admit the screenshots of k3b look really promising/good. The only thing coming close was xcdroast but it refused to write anything if I didn't emulate my IDE to scsi though I read that with newer kernels this wasn't needed cause writing via IDE was good. After setting up scsi-emulation it wouldn't find my CDs anymore either.

So what do you recommend?

K3b is a very good program though Gnome also has cd burner software that you might like to try. And yes, you will need the kde bits and pieces for k3b to work.

If you are running a kernel from the 2.6 series then you dont need scsi-ide emulation, but you still need the relevant modules in your kernel (very possibly already taken care of by your distribution). 2.4 and lower need the emulation to burn to a cd writer which is connected through the ide channel (if its a scsi burner then you don't need it).

Hope that helps

Alex

Gnome uses nautilus as burning program isn't it?

Now I have to choose the lesser of two evils lol. I'm using fluxbox now.

I'm running a 2.6.8.1 kernel which I configured myself, which modules would I need then for burning? That was what I read about scsi-emulation which makes me think xcdroast is a bit outdated.

Thanks for the help!

It can be done through natilus but there are other Gnome programs. Gnome Toaster is one such program and I'm sure there are more.

I personally use WindowMaker rather often so know the pain. Unfortunately I don't like not using my favourite programs so have the two Desktops installed as well. With lots of hard drive space, RAM and fast machine it doesn't make that much difference.

As for the kernel I don't quite remember off the top of my head. If in doubt put something in as a module and if you don't need it then you can forget about it. I'm afraid I'm not sure quite what you need because I need the SCSI subsystem to support my SATA hard drive. According to the help for the ide-scsi emulation in the 2.6 kernels you don't need it anymore.

Hope that helps

Alex

P.S. BTW some programs may not work without ide-scsi if they are old or rely on cdrecord. I remember reading that the author of cdrecord had a tiff over the way the kernel now does cd writing and it might have problems.
