K3B and LG drive and TDK disks. Hmm.
Trying to burn a TDK DVD-RW x4 disk with K3B is causing me problems. The error I get is shown below:
Quote:
/dev/hdc: engaging DVD-RW DAO upon user request...
:-( Failed to change write speed: 1385->706
|
The drive I'm using is made by LG and is model GSA-4081B. Anyone had any experience with this drive/disk combination, or got any suggestions for what to try next?
Thanks

When you are doing the burn in K3B, do you have the drive speed set to auto? If so, set it to 4x. If not, set it to auto (i.e., the opposite of the way that's not working). Also, have you erased (blanked) the DVD-RW before trying to write on it?

I have tried with the speed set to auto and also set at either 'ignore', 1x and 2x which are the only other possibilities - same result.
I also tried to format the DVD and was informed that the 'media is already empty' and, 'Success!'. However, if I try and force the format, although I still get a, 'Success!' message, the output of the debug is as follows:
Quote:

Therefore I assume that K3B has in fact done nothing and failed the format. I thought perhaps that the LG and TDK disks might be incompatible, but I also found a review on the net for this device which stated that the disks which performed best were TDK. This review was performed under a Windows system but that shouldn't reflect on the relationship between the device and the media. Therefore I'm working on the assumption that it's a software problem.
The other avenue is the driver which is set to auto. However, if the driver was faulty then I would assume that no recordings would be possible, which is not the case. I also have a Maxell DVD-RAM disk which did record successfully.

Kernel: 2.6.8-24.14-default
Running as root makes no difference, but anyway I can burn CD's so that's probably not it.

The branding on the disk doesn't necessarily reflect the manufacturer.

Useful site, thanks for that. Turns out my drive is a coaster maker, according to most of the posts, but it hasn't gone wrong for me yet. (Still assuming I have a software problem). Also turns out that the TDK's I'm using are unknown quantities, (i.e., noone who's used one with this drive has posted), but plenty of other brands look good. I'm going to try another brand and see what happens.

From the k3b site:
"Do not use Kernel 2.6.8
A patch that was introduced into the kernel shortly before the 2.6.8 release makes K3b and also the dvd+rw-tools unusable on Linux (unless run as root but that is not recommended). The very important GET CONFIGURATION MMC command is rejected by the kernel for reasons I cannot see and writing commands like MODE SELECT also fail (K3b cannot detect CD writers without it) even when the device is opened O_RDWR. Until this issue has been solved I strongly recommend to stick to kernel version 2.6.7.
Update: The kernel guys are currently fixing the problem so the next kernel release should work again.
Update 2: The problem is NOT fixed in 2.6.8.1
Update 3: Be aware that kernel 2.6.8 also contains the memory leak which makes it impossible to write audio cds, even as root."

Ah. In that case I'll revert to 2.6.7 and give it a shot. But not today as I've got other fish to fry. Monday then.

After throwing 6 cds to the trash with 2.6.8 i have also tried 2.6.9 and 2.6.10.
2.6.9 worked fine for me but I had to continue using k3b as root to be able to burn cds, also the k3b page says that it does not work well with external cd burners (which I have not).
2.6.10 works perfectly by the moment and I can execute k3b as non-root user again.

For what it's worth..
I eventually got around to sorting this problem by buying different disks. The item came with one Maxell disk (DVD RAM), so I bought some Maxell DVD-RW's. They work, even with the 2.6.8 kernel. Anyone interested in three unused TDK DVD+RW disks?

Gsa4081b
I have had problems with getting this disk to work as an external dvd drive in an external case. I had it working on SuSE9.2 in a desktop case, but I remember I did have a problem with it. From memory I needed to make sure I had the correct drive assigned in fstab, ie: I had set it up as a second master drive along with another master hd, so that in the fstab it was called hdc, not hdb, also I remember having to go in and fiddle with the kernel and possibly turn on scsi support and ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom or similar to get it to work. Now this has all changed. Windows users as well have had problems with this device.
It may also be a media problem, I know in the past one burner would not cope with TDK but performed like a trouper with Verbatim. I have
heard good reports by someone who used Phillips media as well for the GSA4081B, so you may like to try one disk of it if you can beg, borrow or steal one from a friend and see if that works.
Still mulling over this device as an external drive, works in PC but not externally using Fedora 5. So much has changed since SuSE9.2.
Cheers
