Then I have to say I don't have any suggestions. I seldom use rewritable optical media and haven't encountered the problem myself, though I have found K3B to be much more reliable than Brasero.
When I re-use a rewriteable XFburn automatically writes over (clears the DVD) what is already on the disk for me. You can use the terminal to erase a CD/VDV:-
$ sudo dvd+rw-format -force /dev/sr0
* BD/DVD±RW/-RAM format utility by <appro@fy.chalmers.se>, version 7.1.
* 4.6GB DVD-RAM media detected.
* formatting 0.0%:-( unable to FORMAT UNIT: Input/output error

In that case; your re-writable is probably old.
I have a few old ones that won't erase and or aren't recognized at all.
Input/output error could mean a bad cable or connection to the drive.
Agreed; it's happened to me.
After replacing the SATA cable to my HDD my distro booted right up.
The cable went bad as it was tied to the case with one of those ties.
If the disk came from Windows that could explain it. I can't erase nor write data to a DVD or CD RW that was first used in Windows on my Mac either it's a one way trip from my PC to my Mac.
