JRE Problem

Hello again evry1,
I've been trying to install Java Runtime on my linux box for the past month and cant seem to get it working. I browsed to a website which requires JRE to run and tried the install plugin uption (Firefox 1.0.1 and FIrefox 1.0). It told me that I had to install the plugin manually, I tried that and got back the same error. I went the Sun's website and download the *.bin and installed it and it still didnt work. I even follow their installation guide exactly and it still doesn't work. I really need some help cuz a lot of the IDE's that I downloaded need it and I cant browse a few of my fav websites.
Thanks in advance

You will find what is probably the answer to your question in many threads here. I can't remember the exact syntax, but there are two issues to consider.

1. Is 'java' in your $PATH variable?
2. Check out Firefox's FAQ, regarding the java plugin Linux installation. Look for an 'ln' (Link) statement that needs to be executed.

The following worked for me.

Find the plugin after installing the jre fro the sun website. once you find the plugin then just create a soft link to it in your home .mozilla/plugins or .firefox/plugins directory and start firefox.

ok, now its my turn

i have had FC3 for months now, and have had to install and reinstall a few times (i am digressing)

i have installed java a few times, and after some tinkering, i usually get it up and running

well now my problem is that i have downloaded, installed, symbolic linked and all of that, but i remember there is one more tweak i have to do, and i am asking anyone

aside from the standard download instructions, (symbolic linking in mozilla/plugins, and firefox/plugins) isnt there another tweak? (i think its a config file)

Raafi,

It seems that the link already exists in your plugins directory.

Try the following: rm libjavaplugin_oji.so and type 'y' to confirm the removal of the link.

does anyone know how i can correct this problem?

i am at a total loss of how i installed two java's and i dont know which goes where, nor how to remove either (without probably screwing something totally up)

W: There are multiple versions of "jre" in your system.

This package won't be cleanly updated, unless you leave
only one version. To leave multiple versions installed,
you may remove that warning by setting the following
option in your configuration file:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated { "^jre$"; };

To disable these warnings completely set:

RPM::Allow-Duplicated-Warning "false";

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
