jq parse error: Invalid numeric literal at line 1, column 5

When I am trying to pass a parsed JSON string into a variable I get the following
parse error: Invalid numeric literal at line 1, column 5

Following line of code is throwing that error
z="$(echo curl -s https://www.quandl.com/api/v3/datase...9ZzBbKAs11rAZv | /Users/itadmin/jq -r '[getpath(["dataset","data"])] | tostring')"

Help appreciated!!!
