John the Ripper

Hey all,
Just for kicks I downloaded John the Ripper to see 1. One, if any of my passwords could be cracked with it and 2. To see how and if the thing even works. I can't for the life of me figure out how to use it properly. I made a copy of my /etc/passwd just to make it easier:

Code:
bash-2.05b# run/john passwd
Loaded 0 passwords, exiting...
Now I'm not sure if that means it just plain didn't work or if it didn't find any passwords...which probably isn't the case as I set up a test with 'dog' as its password I read something about the passwd file being shadowed with a one way hash...do I need to unshadow it and how? If thats the case, is there any way for John to work without unshadowing it? Or which i just realized, the passwd file have nothing to do with what I'm trying to do? lol

Thanks all!

Nevermind guys I figured it out looks like it was the /etc/shadow I was looking for lol
Code:
Loaded 3 passwords with 3 different salts (FreeBSD MD5 [32/32])
dog (tester1)
And it doesn't look like its gonna get my real passwords any time soon!
