java1.5 installation error ubuntu 10.04 server edition uname 2.6.32-23-server
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Server edition as a Virtual Machine on one of my system. On KVM.

uname -a
 2.6.32-23-server #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 09:11:11 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I needed java 1.5 for some program. So I downloaded it from Oracles website the Linux package for Java 1.5 here

then did
a chmod +x java_ee_sdk-5_01-linux.bin
and tried

-bash: ./java_ee_sdk-5_01-linux.bin: No such file or directory

Googled it tried a link on Ubuntu forums here
the link is solved but it did not helped me much.
Some other forums I got that this problem can be solved by some method like

ln -s
in my case it was
so I did

ln -s /usr/lib/ /usr/lib/
did a apt-get dist-upgrade rebooted but did not solved my problem.
So what should I do or check now ?

Isn't java 1.6.0_20 backward compatible?

I want to host a Learning Management System known as sakai just as moodle is on PhP Sakai is on Java.
I tried the version 2.7 of Sakai which did not worked.
Gave me more errors which I have not posted here sakai is a Learning Management System and I tried the latest 2.7 on Ubuntu which failed and so I wanted to try the version 2.6 which says it does have problem with Java 1.6 so I want Java 1.5 to be installed on my system check this link

because of which I posted the problem here.

Installing java, Ubuntu 10.04
After install, check that it is configured :
'sudo update-alternatives --config java'
... and choose sun.

Well I had seen that link before posting the problem and had Java 1.6 working already.
My problem is not Java 1.6 it is Java 1.5 I have to test a Learning management System known as Sakai We are using version 2.6 of it In fact we have to use it.The choice is not in my hands.
Java 1.6 is incompatible with Sakai 2.6 Here is a link
On Sakai page that says what I just mentioned.

Well, then ...
"" Installing Sun JDK 5 on Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 ""

If 'java -version' then shows the wrong version :
sudo update-alternatives --config java
.. and choose "sun-java5".
